How and why would having your lights to high or to low make a difference in algae growth or coral growth and how do you know how high I should have them

I have an odyssea 48 3W led light on a 30gal tank

I've got LEDs like 6-8" off the water surface of a 24" deep tank.

What does it do if you raise or lower your lights do?

Not going to lower them anymore, I don't want the water splash on the lenses.
Raising them, gives more spread on the tank.

Ian having some bleaching issues with my sps since I can't dim them down should I raise my lights?
