I came across a good deal on a RSR 170 while I’m waiting for the approval from my wife on the 180gal 72x24x24. In the process of setting up the 170 24x20x20 I believe, I was deciding on lighting that wouldn’t break the bank. I want to try using the Aquatic Life T5 hybrid 24in with one AI Prime 16HD with the intentions to start off with Softies and LPS and eventually add Some Sticks (SPS) later. While I wouldn’t need the LED for the lps, I don’t want to shock the lps when I add the AI prime later for SPS so I want to have both at the start. My question is will this be too strong for my LPS?!! Attached are photos of BRS par readings and settings for my intended setup. Also if i took this concept to my future 180 using two 36in Hybrids with 4 Prime 16HDs would it work? I understand LPS needs to be between 75 and 150 and SPS needs to be between 250 and 350. I’m worried that this lighting set up will kill or bleach the LPS.

I’m currently running 4x prime HD over my 90 gal bow. I’m thinking of adding the aquatic life hybrid fixture as well. I do fine with softies and lps. Sps either doesn’t do well or turns green except a few. I’m curious about the same thing but I would be adding the t5 to the aquarium and also worried about too much light for the softies.

So I’ll be watching and following along, but I’m thinking to tune down the led lights and use the acclimation mode to slowly increase intensity, but I’m also still researching this.

I’m running 2x prime HD’s over my 20 gallon and just added a T-5 for supplemental lighting last week. My sticks are doing great, as well as the lps and softies, but I would think that it would not be enough if my tank was over 30 gallons, so you might be able to grow some sticks with 2 primes over your rsr 170

are you using the aquatic life? With four bulbs? That’s seems like too much light from what I’ve read?

No I’m using a 2 bulb, it’s not that much light, most important for me is for the acros to get a good light from all angles. You’ll be able to play with your primes and figure out if they work for you and see if you need more lighting as things grow
