Hi reefers,

Iv have some “live” Rock that I got a few months ago for my tank but then realised I had too much and couldn’t even store the “live” rock in my sump as I had too much in there as well, anyway roll forward today and iv added some of the small pieces of live rock iv had in my sump to my main tank and I am now wanting to put the left over “live” rock I had now into my sump but only problem I have is I didn’t store it in water it’s just been sitting in a dry bucket.

My question is what’s the best thing to do with the stored “live” rock before adding to my sump? Can I just straight add it into my sump or do I need to put some salt water into the bucket it’s being stored in currently first and let it sit in that first before adding to my tank?? And if so how long would you leave it soaking before adding it into the sump?

Help very much appreciated 😊

If its been sitting dry in a bucket, then its has dead organic matter inside the rock which will begin to rot as soon as you put it in the water. If its a lot of rock, then you might see an ammonia spike, if its just a small amount of rock, the system might be able to process it.

If you want to clean the rocks, put them into a bucket with bleach water and powerhead for a few days, then rinse well over the next few days then its good to go.

Exactly what Mojo Rising said! If it has been allowed to dry, now everything that was "live" is now dead, and we begin to decay in water.
