Live Rock?

I am deciding to throw the rock I have out because Aiptasia is out of control. I am thinking of getting TBS Rock or Gulf Live Rock. If I get this rock, should I put it in a Rubbermaid container to check for pests before adding to the main tank? I am only thinking of getting 20lbs and some dry rock. Thoughts?

If you are concerned about undesirable hikers, set up an observation tank. An observation tank needs flowing-oxygenated-good quality water and a light source. It may be difficult to see hikers in a Rubbermaid though.

Which hikers are you worried about?

get bergia nudis, no need to throw out good rock especially if its real ocean rock not man made garbage.
theres a good chance you will get aptasia again.

Just remember that any place in your aquarium that has water contact (pumps, sump, pvc/tubing, etc) would need to be cleaned first. The pests are not just in your display area. Good luck

If you decide to get gulf live rock or tbs and you want to observe it before adding it. It would be best to get a tank to put the rock into because you would be likely to miss a lot of hitchhikers if you are only looking from the top of a Rubbermaid.
Not sure how much rock you need but I set up an observation tank a few months ago and it cost me less than $40 to buy it all from petco with their first time purchase discount. I bought a ten gallon, a 50w heater, and a sponge filter.

I just set up a 40 breeder from marketplace today for that very purpose. People sell entire kits with lids filters and heaters cheap around here. I got the whole kit for $60 and now I got a stand I don't need as well lol.

I have 75# dry marco in the 150G as of a couple days ago. I have 120# aragonite going in tomorrow. Now I need to get as much live rock as I can fit in that 40 and watch it for a bit to eventually top off the dry marco in the display. Still haven't figured out where to buy it tho. Got a preference for LR sellers? Bristleworms freak me out too.

@LiverockRocks TBS is what I went with, they follow through with order very well. They send you a survey after you order. I asked for some clams on my rocks and they gave me some huge full grown ones and they all survived! They are also very good at picking out undesirable hitchhikers if you ask them to.

I asked for them to remove those in my order notes, I didnt get any. Its possible though, hence the observation tank.
A sponge filter is a rudimentary filter it sucks in water towards it and the sponge sucks up particulates out of the water. It pumps air bubbles to the surface as well. They are typically used in qt or store tanks. They look like this.

I tried Bergia Nudi's three times and didnt work. I am thinking my Wrasse ate them or something else.

if I take all my rock out and get berghia nudis. How do I keep the fish and corals from dying wothout liverock? I am guessing get a filter or do I need to just do small water changes? I think my Wrasse ate them..

my plan is to put rock in 10 gallon with nothing but the rock, heater, water pump and sponge filter. In my display corals and fish.

I thought of something. I can add Berghia to 10 gallon tank and add rock with aiptasia little at a time. 10 gallon I would need a heater, water pump and filter correct? I am thinking my wrasse eating them before they can start to colonize.

I have been through the same thing. Took all mine out and started over. I have had great success with Marco rocks aquaculture rock. I purchased it straight from Marco rocks. Great people to deal with.

If you have a 10 gallon as an observation tank, you might consider ordering a Pico Package, a Jar Package or even an 8lbs Nano Premium Treasure Chest. These contain small amounts that would seed the tank nicely.

There is much less chance of gorillas or mantis with nano sized rock. And if one did happen to hitch along it will be easy to see in the 10 gallon and easy to catch.

As noted earlier throwing out the rock and replacing it with quality rock from sources like TBS will not solve your problem. I mean it will solve the awesome factor or pretty as it is amazing rock but the chances of aiptasia making its way back are highly probably.

Of course it will depend on how your system is set up and what the equipment path is. Sump, skimmer, canister filters, and so forth as these are all areas that aiptasia may be including plumbing paths and overflows. Removing the rock still leaves all of this in place.

Depending on the wrasse there are some hobbyist reporting that they will eat the nudies. Likewise peppermint shrimp. Some say well the wrasse is out during the day and the nudies hide but the peppermints hunt at night...

Size of display may allow some utility fish but know up front that they may, or may not, help. Copperband is one. Milletseed Butterflyfish is another. Matted filefish. Buy them because you want them not because they are reported to assist.

TBS though - solid gold.

Ok, I moved 2 rocks covered with aiptasia in 10 gallon. I used vinegar to kill them. However, this morning seen a lot of worms dead. I am guessing vinegar killed them. I guess used to much at least only 2 rocks.

Looks like aiptasia maybe gone finally. I used F-aiptasia, Joes juice and major water changes every time after. The rocks that was covered put in a 10 gallon no sign of aiptasia now 3 days crossing fingers.
