Just wanted to mention this in case you haven’t tried them, but there are some other options that can work without adding any products. If you have a skimmer you could cut the number of hours it runs. If you have any filter socks, floss or mechanical filtration you can remove those. You can also just feed more.

I appreciate that, I run a very dry skim mostly for air exchange cup fills about once a month so essentially does nothing, and I run filter floss to filter particulate out of the water I change that about as often as I empty my skimmer, as far as feeding more, I feed substantial amounts but really I’m just kind of anal about having complete control over my nitrates I want them at 15 no higher no lower and the easiest and cheapest way for me to do that is dose nitrate. Just curious what potassium nitrate people are using or if it even matters

Just ammonia dose. Best way imo. There is a long thread on it here. Cheap and easy.

I would not recommend potassium nitrate as it will add too much potassium in the long run. I highly recommend ammonium based nutrient dosing.
If however, there is no way around for you, and it needs to be KNO₃: Dissolving 163g KNO₃ in 1L water will create a stock solution such that 1mL of stock solution increases nitrate (NO₃) by 1ppm (and potassium by 0.63ppm) for a 100L tank.

You can create equally strong stock solutions with 137g sodium nitrate, 132g calcium nitrate (anhydrate), and 190g calcium nitrate tetrahydrate. I still encourage you to use an ammonium based nutrient solution.

I buy food grade sodium nitrate granules from Amazon. For my 180 gallon tank I:

1. Mix 3 TBSP NaNO3 in 375 ml RODI

2. Use 25 ml of this solution to raise nitrates by about 4 ppm

You would have to ratio step 2 for your size of tank

Never use stump remover. It has no purity assurance, and since it is potassium nitrate, it risks boosting potassium too much.

Food grades of sodium or calcium nitrate, or ammonium bicarbonate are all good choices. I use the latter.
