I bought a lion fish from a local fish store. I have a QT tank that has some copper residue. I don’t want to kill the fish. Moving the lion from 35 ppt to 13 ppt will kill it right.

Could I put it in a bucket all day and slowly raise it?

Put a bubbler too or should I not try it

Definitely would wait till the other guys chime in. Lion fish I believe are sensitive to low specific gravity, not certain if they are like regular fish where you can just stick them in it immediately or not

If you are treating with copper, is there a reason you want to go hyposalinity? generally its either or while both can be combined. I would focus on the copper not exceeding treatment level .5 for a full 30 days with added aeration. Also maintain good water quality and monitor ammonia with a reliable test kit.
How are you testing copper level?

It’s my fault the copper treatment was weeks ago in the QT I just never got it all out. The hypo is on the main tank.

I would not put a lionfish into a tank with copper! As far as hypo goes, there are also serious concerns to be aware of, like low ph and water quality. Going to a lower sg is safe but the effects of low ph and ammonia spikes usually do in alot of lionfish or cause secondary conditions that would normally not been an issue

Do a 100% water change in your qt and run cuprizorb through a reactor.

In the future in lieu of copper, use General cure which is safer for them. Im not a fan of Hypo again with Lions but LionKing also emphasized that.

I’ve dosed hundreds of Pterois lionfish with full 2.5 ppm doses of Coppersafe, for decades. No issues at all if done properly. The issue comes in with higher doses of ionic copper, or when people use reducing agents/ammonia removers with it.

I don’t normally use hyposalinity on them, but that is an option. I would take 72 hours to drop it that far, in perhaps 4 steps. I’ve done it in less time, but only if there is active disease that needs to be controlled quicker.

General cure does not have good activity against protozoans, but works well for flukes.

I won’t use chloroquine on lionfish.

Still hasn’t eaten I’m guessing some sort of parasite. Look at the tail as well

What have you tried to feed it?

How is the water testing? (Ammonia, specific gravity/salinity, temperature)

Can you post a video, I want to get some idea of its respiration rate.

The fish's color is good, I can't tell you what is going on with the trailing edge of the tail fin.

1.022 salinity
.04 ammonia
I tried live mollies
I know lions aren’t the most active fish but he seems lethargic

The lion's respiration is a bit fast/deep. The water seems a bit murky - does it look like that in person?
What type of test are you using for ammonia?

I filmed in the dark and the glass is kind of dirty the waters ok. I used the Hanna checker and api. I mixed prazi and metroplex.

I’m not optimistic.

Prazi and metroplex, if dosed correctly is essentially the same as General Cure, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Do you know if the fish was feeding at the store?

I'm not optimistic either - just no good diagnosis here, sorry.

It does not look skinny or anything. Do you know the history? I have had lions in captivity for years that would never chase live prey again - try on meaty treat on the end of a feeding stick in a few days. I have had perfectly healthy lions take a week off from eating before - same with some eels (can be months with some of them).

Good luck.

Do you have to acclimate lions differently then other saltwater fish?
