LPS For Beginers

Hey everyone, I was thinking about getting some LPS coral, but first I wanted your all's opinion. What kinds of LPS are hardy and good for beginners?

*My tank already has some mushrooms and soft corals, has decent lights, and is 9 or so months old. If that makes a difference.

Acan corals are really good corals for beginners, they are hard to kill and look great.

My tank is 18 inches deep and has leds and halides.

Yes. That's plenty of light of 18" height. One of my favorites is a Duncan (also known as a whisker coral) and acans.

Acans and frogspawn were my first. Believe it or not i nearly killed my acans, alk spike was my best guess. But they came back great and give you time to correct problems before flat out croaking.... my frogspawn and mummy eye chalice have lived through alot also and never skipped a beat! Same with a favia I have.

just add them slowly and dont od!

Agreed, you can't go wrong with acans and they are fast growers. Especially if you feed them

Duncans, Hydnophora (yea yea I know it's listed as an sps), Red aquacultured Goniopora, Alevopora, Bubble coral/Plerogyra, Pagoda/Turbinaria (yea yea again on the listed as sps), Galaxea. :-)

Not an LPS or SPS, it's actually classified as a soft coral but I've had great luck with Heliopora or "Blue Ridge Coral". It builds a hard skeleton and looks a lot tougher to keep than it is. I have a good sized piece that's survived numerous mishaps where most other corals perished.

As mentioned candy cane corals and acans are very easy, euphyllia (hammer, frogspawn etc.) Can sometimes be finicky from what I have seen. I have a war coral that is doing absolutely fantastic even with the issues I am having with the tank ATM. My plate and chalice also seems to not mind as well. Galaxea is also an easy one. The only issue you may have with both halides and led is too much light for some LPS. Most of them do not appreciate high lighting so i tend to keep them on the sand bed and lower half of my tank, and I only run LEDs.

micromussa lordhowensis formerly known as acanthastrea lordhowensis. What most people refer to as acans or acan lords. Stick them on the bottom and feed them all the time :D. I'll jump on the bandwagon of Galaxea, it was one of my first, just make sure that it has allot of room around it. Duncans and Caulastrea as mentioned are super hardy. Hollywood Stunner chalice is really forgiving and fast growing.
