They look aiptasia-ish to me but not completely sure.

Huh. As it turns out... they're called Pineapple sponges. I've found them to be harmless.

They never went away in my tank (probably because I did not run a skimmer and subsequently gave them lots of suspended matter to consume).

They are good to have unless there numbers get huge then you got to worry about them clogging pipes. I like them. Just part of the natural filter.
