I grew up with freshwater aquariums, started my own about 4 years ago with some success. Built a reef jar about a year ago; it's had its ups and downs and I've learned a lot from it. Planning to replace my big desk ornament with a huge desk ornament (fluval evo 13.5) soon and thought it might be wise to stop lurking and get in here.

Thanks in advance for all the advice I'm about to receive!

Welcome! Glad you joined. We'd love to see photos of old 'desk ornament'!

Have you considered starting your build thread? I found its a great place to document my tank's evolution for myself. I started tank first then joined, so I'm still finding myself going back collecting pictures & updating historically as well as current state. Once you create your first post in your thread under Forum > Member Aquariums and link it to your account, they will give you build badge (look left, under my ID)

This might help you find people local to you:

This is a good reference book type online article I still review:

Welcome to R2R! You’ll find that the people here are awesome, ready to help, and quite knowledgeable. We’re glad you joined! Hopefully you’ll start a build thread so we can see your reef as it progresses.

I’d love to see pictures of your reef jar too. Was it like the “eco jars” on YouTube?

I have a build thread up now (though nothing is currently built, really). Links to tiktoks of my reef jar and freshwater aquarium there. Can post photos or something if that's easier for folks.

That would work. You could put pictures of it on your build thread. I’d love to check the jar out on TikTok too!

I just started it! This is all super helpful, thank you for the recommendations <3

Wahoo - I found it! Here is the top link:

Weirdly your badge hasn't shown up, and typically that happens automatically and pretty fast. I'm thinking you have done the hard part (make thread) without the claim part (step 2 to get badge).

Below is the information and links they gave me when I was new:

One fun way to learn from others and keep a record of your reef aquarium is to create your very own build thread! A build thread is just a thread that tells us about your aquarium and might include photos. You can create your build thread in one of these forums. MEMBER'S AQUARIUMS

Once you have created a build thread then you can get your VERY FIRST USER BADGE! YAY! It's easy to do and I have created a thread that tells you how to do it here: BUILD THREAD BADGE

This was correct, thanks for the tip. Strangely the build you linked isn't mine, though. Should be easier for people to find now :)
