I don’t know anything about macro algae, I just got this clump for my sump and the LFS sold it as a “red floating macro”, good deal but it’s really dense and after a week it developed this orange stuff.

What do I do?

I’ve had red macroalgae turn orange when exposed to high light and exposed to air

It's dying....what you're seeing is like the color change of Fall in deciduous tree leaves.

Can you post details of the system it's in including water paramerts and equipment setup?

We just got new lights and the orange bits seemed to disappear. There was another patch that was shaded and never experienced this…

It’s still very dense in my opinion, but my dad sees nothing wrong with it. What can I do?

Then it's adapting to the new lights...or CUC and system flow has cleared away to off-color parts.

Assuming it's adapting, and as long as it has plentiful nutrients, it sounds like it'll be fine. Double check your N&P levels maybe?
