John Madden, the burly former coach who has been one of pro football's most popular broadcast analysts for three decades, is calling it quits.

Madden worked for the past three seasons on NBC's Sunday night NFL game. His last telecast was the Super Bowl between Arizona and Pittsburgh.

"It's time," Madden said. "I'm 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and their five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I'm home and, more importantly, when I'm not. ... It's been a great ride."

I can't say I was ever a fan of Madden and his gift of always stating the incredibly obvious, but he is definitely a legend and it will be weird watching football without his analysis...anyways, I'm a much bigger college football fan (go buckeyes)

my favorite madden quote is..."the team that scores the most points normally wins"

wow i can watch and enjoy football again.. well almost being a raider fan as a kid i do look foward to al davis getting lost in his boat=)

Sounds like my thoughts will mesh with everyone elses;). I never really cared for him and put the volume at zero until I was getting complacent with the game and needed to get riled up again, needed a laugh because I knew that if he opened his mouth he'd sound like a complete moron, or if I was too drunk to care. He is a legend and one of those thigns I'll be making fun of for decades to come, and I guess I wish him well, but I won't miss him, I don't think. I've seen some younger commentators that sounded as though they were in direct competition for his commenting job (slow deliberate speech, stating th eocmplete obvious as if they were the first ones in the world to think of it and are the only ones who could possibly really understand what they are saying), so there may be an entire school of Maddenism coming around the corner to replace him...
