I’ve noticed that every time I add magnesium (brs pharma) my corals especially the Zoas (not all) seem to become unhappy. My mag is at about 1300 really want it at 1350-1375 but I don’t want to stress things out even more. I dumped my first batch of Mg ordered an new one and same issue. I don’t go over the recommended dosage at all. Maybe a 20-25ppm dose and everything gets ticked. Anyone have similar issues?

Only happens when I dose Mg

No, I have never experienced that.....I actually add Mg to my water change salt weekly without any issues. What type are you using and how much are you dosing?

Thinking about your post: What test kit are you measuring Mg with? If you are getting negative results from the livestock I might suspect that the levels in the tank are not in line with what your kit is giving.

I add about 500mls, I put 250 mls slowly into the overflow in the afternoon and then 250 mls slowly into the overflow before lights out. This should only raise it maybe 20ppm am I doing something wrong?

I don't see that you are doing anything "wrong." I've added Mg much faster (greater overall Mg increase/addition) and not had any issues. I do drip my solutions into the sump (vs pouring slowly into the overflow), but our methods seem fairly similar. Since you are seeing problems, I wondered if your Mg levels you reported might be off? Salifert is generally a reliable Mg test brand. I was wondering if your levels were actually much higher than ~1300, then perhaps you would expect the poor results you are reporting with your addition? This is still a mystery...

What is your source of magnesium?

Some sources have impurities which might explain the effect you see.

I’m using BRS pharma grade. I am though having issues with it dissolving completely. Haven’t had my last two batches mix 100% clear. They seem to leave a fair amount of precipitation but I only dose the clear part of the gallon. (I mix it according to the instructions)

There is a chemical reaction when adding magnesium and it causes heat as well so it should be completely dissolved or put in an area like in sump way away from display.

I just purchased a new gallon of BRS Magnesium Mix. I think I may record myself making the gallon batch. Even though it’s pretty straight forward. I may just add little by little and stirring while I keep adding.

The whole add all the mix and add 3/4 RODI shake and then top off isn’t working.
