What are the main causes why xenia could not thrive but other corals such as zoanthids or mushroom and gsp can?

Ditto. Two different species, pulsing and non-pulsing. I rip out swatches of them from time to time to help with nutrient export. Also got them in the sump now. They've been ridiculously hardy even when other corals weren't doing well due to one mishap or another. They definitely don't need 'dirty' water. I would have a hard time saying under what conditions they wouldn't thrive. Mine seem to like a lot of flow, even to the point where it's constantly whipping them around in the current. Also, I do supplement iodine in my systems; xenia may like that.Mine grows like crazy in my tank. My phosphate on a Hannah checker always reads at 0. However that means it can be anywhere from 0.00 to .04 due to the accuracy.
