The gyre is great but their propeleler isnpoorly made. Get the rugged one or you wont have a pump.

I have the 130 for my 75 gal tank. I run it at 60% in the pulse mode and I also use a rugular pump on the opposite wall down low to get a little more flow lower in the tank. I have also just ordered a 150 for my new 150 gallon tank. Coralvue said their gyres now come with the ruggedized propellors which is what you want. The non-ruggedized propellors break very easy. I bought some of the riggedized ones for my 130 and they are a lot stronger and very difficult to break.

I had the original and it was great for a while. It was a little noisy w/o the new mount and in a matter of time pretty much everything about it was broken and it needed cleaning constantly. The old rotors would just shatter if anything got near it (mini ceriths) and sometimes for no apparent reason, drive cogs stripped, rubber grommets came apart etc. Once one fin came loose and dominoed about 3/4 of the fins. I got gouged by Coralvue for fifty some dollars on replacement rotors and new drive cogs (these had a flange) only to have the fins come off those. Eventually I tossed it in the junk bin when no matter what I did the left side would not turn once in the water. While supposedly better now with ruggedized rotors, new mounts etc. its too little to late and I'll stick with Vortech's.

Can't be... they have not been out that long. If I remember right I got mine right after they were released maybe 2 years ago. The thread got me thinking though. Might be worth fixing it with newer parts like rotors, selling it and getting back some of my money or maybe using it on a future tank.

I got the 130 probably the first week they were out for my 90g reef. Love the flow.
Mine was completely destroyed within the first 6 months. Rotors broke, cages broke, stopped running. I had even cleaned it every month in vinegar.
Apparently they have an "A" and "B" section (really hard to tell one section from the other.) If you don't have the correct section on the correct side, at original set up, or after cleaning, the unit will appear to be working but in reality the unit is preparing to grind to a halt.
Again, I liked the flow so I bought another one right away. This way I can take the parts from the 2 units to make sure that I have one that works.
I fully agree in paying a manufacturer for his research and development costs of bringing a new product to market, but if this newest Maxspect goes, I'm going to buy the Jebao knockoff.

cleaning mine is a pain in the butt. It takes me about 5 attempts before the red circle of death goes away. It moves a lot of water, but the efficiency decreases as it get coraline algae and such growing on it. I curse the thing every time I take it apart to clean it and put it back together.

The ruggedized propellers had 4 blazes instead of 8 in the original model. On one end it has the white plastic like the one shown in the link while the other end come with hard plastic instead of flimsy plastic gaskets. If you still have warranty on your gyre I would suggest contact the manufacture to get replacement. In my case they gave me 50% credit toward my order of new propellers.
