After spending the afternoon draining my overflow to get my goby out. I am wondering if I could put mesh or a screen over the intake hole? Any advice?

You can but watch it for getting clogged.

I have a drain on my fug to the return pump and I used a semi open mesh and a few days later my fug almost over flowed bc I didn't pay attention.
It was slowly filtering things out but at the same time got clogged...

I get no clogs at all, it hasn't even been touched in 6 months. You should be able to get it at either one and its cheap. Problem is you'll probably have to buy a 20 foot roll of it, its under $10 bucks. The nice thing about it was one of my clowns jumped on it and I could hear him flapping around and all i had to do was slide him back in the water. I even used it on the back of my canopy as you can see in the pic to keep fish from jumping behind the tank.

Just an idea, what I did was cut a piece of acrylic 1 inch larger than my over flow. Painted it flat black, with a couple of small blocks to hold in place. Serves 2 purposes, 1,no creatures in the over flow. 2, it stops the light at the over flow holes and thus stops algae from growing in the openings. I will try to upload a pic.

I do like that!!! It seems like my snails are always venturing into my overflow to... I might use the gutter guard on the hole and the acrylic for the top... Is there any kind of specific paint I have to use? Or just paint side up?

Consider getting black or colored (anything opaque, black is best) plastic instead of painting, if you can. Shouldn't be hard if you are ordering online. Ask for it if you are buying local.

I'm curious why these covers sent standard issue...
