Hello all,
In February I bought 60 ish pounds of KP aquatics base rock. It flew in okay with some die off initially. DT was not set up so I made a bin for it. Within 24 hours the stench of ammonia came in from unpredicted levels of die off. I did water changes and added a bag of my own media to help soak up some ammonia as levels were getting pretty high and I didn’t want to kill too much life with that much ammonia. Fast forward to now, it’s been in the bin the whole time and it’s beautiful. I haven’t had any light on it, just a heater and a powerhead. So it’s mostly sponges dusters and film. Very happy with it.
I’m FINALLY ready to put them in the display and start. However, there’s a lot of detritus settled on the bottom of the bin and some on the rocks. Maybe more of a film if I’m being honest since if I brush it away more comes back. There’s pretty good flow in the bin but with that much rock obstructing things get stuck. My question is: for those that have had this experience what measures did you take to minimize the detritus from the bin to your DT?
My plan is to careful take them out and ring them out in a bin of fresh saltwater. Then I’ll run a marine land polisher in the display. If anybody has any personal anecdotes or ways to improve I’d love it!
