That's what every beginning reefer with a decent sized system uses. I had 3 at one time.

How should I go about cleaning it out before I use it? Should I fill it with water and add some vinegar or should I just sponge it out real good and rinse with rodi water

I think either of the above will work. I just rinsed mine out with RODI several times after wiping it out.

What did you store in it before. I had brand new ones that I only used for this. I just wiped them out with rodi water to begin with.

I use the same container. Rodi water goes in at 0 TDs but rises considerably after sitting for several days. Does this indicate a dirty can?

Brutes have been made with various polyethylenes (high density and low density stuff....both) and I can't see how it would have phosphate within??? It's polyethylene! That's it, no plastisizers or anything like that.

How much does it go up? Ultra pure water doesn't really exist in nature, and it naturally attracts dust and stuff like a magnet. Just the dust in the air if it isn't in a tightly sealed container could start making your TDS rise. I do wonder sometimes if they use some type of releasing agent to make the pieces come out of the molds easier. I have always just given them a decent scrub with a magic eraser and RODI water. But to be honest, I never tested TDS after it was put in the barrel.

Water in container is at 15TDS. Tank isn't showing any problems so doesn't seem to be a concern.
