Mixing firefish

If you had a 75 gallon, would you put a pair of helfrichi firefish in with a single red firefish (N. magnifica)?

Considering doing so, but if they are going to fight, I'll put the helfrichi in a different system.

I have fairy wrasses and tilefish in the same tank. Tank is locked down tighter than fort knox. :)

Yeah, I'm looking into a lid (one of my fairy anthias chased the other out of the tank the other day). Fortunately I was sitting there at the time...

As a friend of mine told me: "if it's shaped and looks like a torpedo, expect airtime..."

not worth the hassle, there are likely to fight. Only Magnifca school, so if you wanted that you could get a few magnfica without the helfrichi. Otherwise its better kept to pairs

I'll just put the helfrichi pair in a different tank. I have a lone male magifica in the 75 gallon, and a male/female pair in a fluval evo. I think the helfrichi pair will go in the 47 gallon once done with quarantine. My luck, the magnifica would kill the helfrichi.

When in doubt' I'd go with an acclimation box and see if your LFS / whoever you get them from would take them back the same or next day in case things don't work out. Especially if you offer to bring them back for store credit (as opposed to asking for cash back) you'd probably have a decent shot, especially if you know the people that work there.

Worst comes to worst, you try and sell them on to another local reefer. For what it's worth though, I feel like I remember seeing aquariums with multiple types of firefish, so I'd be optimistic it would work out especially in a 75. Always better to be safe rather than sorry, though

I have never tried mixing fire fish however, when I was in the LFS we had different species in tanks next to eachother with just a pane of glass separating them. If they ever jumped over they didn’t care, no aggression or anything. They also never cared about others of that genus in tanks next to them.

I picked up 2 firefish yesterday a regular red firefish with a purple firefish which is a bit bigger in size. At the lfs they were in the same small tank together and when I asked the guy if I could get one of each he said sure. When I took them home the bigger purple firefish went into the rocks hiding and the red one stayed swimming around the front. This morning however after feeding time I noticed the red firefish was staying away from the front of the tank. The purple one had claimed a cave at the front of the tank and had quickly become territorial over it nipping and biting the little red guy. I just pulled the red firefish out but it doesn't look like he's going to make it. I am upset with myself I thought they would get along that's why I got a pair of them.. didn't think they would be aggressive at all, dang..

They fight less in stores because theres not much space to hide, so they get stressed and group up.

Any reason to think he will fight with other fish in the tank? Mostly wondering about midas blenny or royal gramma..

no, they are usually very peaceful to non-firefish

+1 to this. Fire fish will fight eachother without enough spaces to hide but if there is almost nowhere to claim then they will group up and hide.
Also many fish are only in the LFS for a couple days, excluding the deaths.

The larger specimen will most likely be transitioning from asexual (I think it’s called that) to female and the second most dominant clown of the harem or in this case, pair will become the male. If it’s a percula x occelaris it may be harder to get a pair as they are much more aggressive. I speak from experience, I’ve tried to pair my female Black Photon with about 4-5 other Black Photon juveniles but once they matured they all got picked off and seemed to be dying for some reason.

That’s odd, firefish rarely ever go after other inhabitants. I guess you did lose luck of the draw unfortunately.

Idk why my pictures come out so dark I swear it's pretty bright in there but tried taking a picture of the jerk and the surrounding rockwork. Idk if you can see the cave area he's hanging around but he seems very territorial over it

i have three types of firefish that sleep in the same hole together but they was in the shop for three weeks in seperate tanks side by side.. maybe that helped
sorry to chime in late but thought some should know.. it has been done, only a 4ft tank too!

Remember, a 4’ tank is a rather large tank. The smaller Gobies don’t claim huge territories which is most likely why it worked out.

What species are the fire fish? There is only one that is communal, the rest tend to kill eachother off as they mature if not when they’re young.
