Moray eel with Dwarf lion fish and Frog fish

Hi everyone. I was having a discussion with a relative about when I set up a 40g fish tank what to put in it. I Planned on putting a Zebra Dwarf lion fish and a Frog fish in it, but it was suggested that I put a Moray eel in with them. My question is could you keep a Moray eel with those two fish? or what type of Moray could you keep with them?

I wouldn't put a eel or lion fish in a 40 gallon. They get really big. Angler fish will be fine as a species only tank. I looked into angler fish for a while and I really wanted one however I don't have a reliable source for live feed with out having to get them from a live bait dealer at the beach. I would recommend looking into nutrition requirements for the angler. From what I've read they need live saltwater fish. Feeding frozen or fresh they dont last long. And if you do feed live saltwater you have disease like ich and velvet you have to consider. They are awesome fish but it might not be worth it if you're trying to keep the fish as healthy as possible.

ETA: I missed the dwarf lion part. I have no knowledge about them. Hopefully someone will chime in that can better help.

A moray eels will rip apart those fish. You can opt for a dwarf eel or snowflake.

Make sure you have a tight fitting lid.........they are escape artists.

Moray eels are massive. There’s no eel species that will fit in a 40 gal except maybe a golden dwarf, but they are very rare.

A frogfish would be fine, but the only dwarf lionfish you could keep in a 40-gallon tank is the fuzzy dwarf lionfish and the Fu Manchu lionfish.

Just a note. This 40 gallon tank would be interconnected with a 300+ gallon system, so actual water volume would be close to 400 gallons. OP also intends to use smaller versions, e.g. dwarf lionfish. Swimming room and aggression are the main concerns.

That depends on the type of moray, but there's no common moray which can go into a 40 gallon. (I don't care if the 40 gallon is connected to a 300 gallon, sure the water volume will help with dissolved wastes but I will be taking space into consideration, moray eels swim aswell.)

No eel or lion in this size tank sorry but just not fair to them. They get too big.

Actually morays would leave them both alone, Ive had multiple eels with multiple lions before no issues at all. However anglers are dumb and that might try to eat the lion since they will even eat eachother and often die from eating a fish way too big. But the tank size is not appropriate for lions or eels

No, morays are minimum 2 feet (not including the dwarf moray but those are almost non existent cause they are hawaiian). Morays like to swim and a 40 gallon isnt big enough for an eel or a lionfish. Angler sure but lions and eels need room to swim around

There is a moray which can go into a 40 gallon, but that is not a common moray (gymnothorax melatremus which is also known as the golden dwarf moray), most of the moray's you find now are at a minimum of 2 to 3 feet long with a girth as much as an average man

I wouldn’t do any moray eel in a 40g or 40B. They grow fast and at the size of the tank, would be the same length within or prior to a year. It’s not just about water volume it’s about length as well.

It is indeed a beautiful eel, it's much easier to house since it only grows to around a feet

There's a you tube video of a moray eel devouring full grown lion fish in an aquarium. He was literally ripping them apart from the tail end so they couldn't swim, then swallowing them whole head first.

I had a moray eels years ago............he bit the head off a blue face angel and swallowed a full size harlequin tusk, before I ended up getting rid of him. He wasn't even that big maybe 2' and his head was small.

A fumanchu is a snack as well as the angler especially in a 40 breeder.

That really depends on the size of the eel and it's aggression, but i guarantee that it's definitely possible, though with pebbletooths? No.

Lionfish are not a natural food for eels, atleast that's how it was until they became invasive, even then they weren't a main prey until divers began to train the surrounding wild life to eat them to decrease their population.

What kind of moray was it?? Must have been a huge one! None of mine would take on a lionfish at all let alone a full grown one! But mine are smaller than most

I believe that I've seen a video of a gymnothorax moringa eating some small to medium sized lionfish, though I am highly confident that they weren't full grown.

what the heck is the owner doing wrong is my question. Like thats not normal for eels to eat lions, must have been starving honestly. Dangerous too for the eel if it got stung by the lions
