More than just hot air: Is there a Pufferfish in your aquarium?

The pufferfish is a unique fish for many reasons as many of us who have had them in our aquariums know. Beyond their ability to inflate when stressed, the personality of most pufferfish is very expressive. In fact, it has been suggested that pufferfish may be closest example of a traditional, interactive pet within the aquarium space. However, puffers do have their own requirements and tankmates, water parameters, and other factors need to be considered when making a commitment to these amazing creatures. Many hobbyists admire these fish from afar, however a few decide to go all in and add a pufferfish to their tank. What about you – is there a pufferfish in your aquarium?

I love puffers but I love shrimp too so at the moment no puffers til I don't have shrimp. Then maybe I will get a little Toby sharpnose puffer.

I've had my share over the tears from porcupine and box to sapo, stars and stripes, dogface and guinea fowl

I recently acquired a Papuan Toby or chanigaster papuan and I've fallen in love! He currently resides in my home tank which is softy dominant. I've been having a bit of a difficult time getting the Toby to eat enough food, it'll pick at some small meaty frozen foods but for the most part ignores feeding time. I just gave him a clam on the halfshell and he took 5-10 large bites! Very excited, I think I'll be making an update about him in my build thread soon!

Got him in 21. Was such an awesome fish. Was with us 2 awesome years. Was my first marine fish. Had his own tank. I learned the hard way all wild caught fish should be dewormed. Ive taken my tank in a different direction and wont do another. My heart broke when we burried him. Too awesome to replace.
I’m going to sneak out later tonight and have a puff myself to thank God for His blessings and His amazing creation that includes the puffer fishes. Saw a few in recent days snorkeling in St Thomas and they are just as awesome in the wild as in captivity. Amazing to watch them hunt and move around wherever they are

I've had some over the years and they are hardy, personable and fun. BUT I do not recommend them if you have an acrylic aquarium. They can scratch the hell out of it and it takes a lot of time and effort to buff out the scratches. I haven't added another since my last one passed, but we had him for 10 years!

20 years ago I had 220 gallon FOWLR tank. My porcupine pine puffer was like puppy dog. Eat from my hand, pet him, he swam with me as I moved around the tank. He'd spit water out of the topless tank when he was hungry. I haven't come close to experiencing that level of interaction since.

Because it doesn’t exist in any other wet pet. Puffers for the win all the way!:)
