Most reliable quality return pump?

Marineland did not design the pump other than their color scheme and maybe accessories. That pump is made in Italy by Eden. Eden is a very respectable pump manufacturer.

You sure those were made by Eden?? The compact+ eheim rebrands were absolutely, but the current CompactON rebrand of the old marinelands seem like askoll motors to me. I'd favor them slightly over the Eden built punps personally. The cord insertion and bearing designs on the old marineland 5000 pump were purely askoll design to my eye when I've worked on them.

As an aside have you seen the larger Rossmont AC controllable pump model ? Looks identical to the marineland 5000 or the compactON 5000. I wonder if rossmont is having that motor block OEM built by askoll too.

Agreed on the Rossmont RX link, but not sure Rossmont or any other aquarium company works with Askoll as an OEM that is not under the Hagen umbrella. Royal Exclusiv and Vertex went a different route to get theirs.

What do people here think about royal exclusive and abyzz?

I was considering one of those , I like the 10 yr Warranty on the abyzz to me that speaks volumes on how confident they’re that their product won’t fail and if it does fail say in 7 yrs they will replace it that’s just nuts to me

For internal AC pumps I like Sicce pumps for reliability and price. Tunze is the same pump.
Had one running for like 4 years and never even cleaned it and it ran like new, do not do that. Years later it still works great.

For internal DC pumps I like Reef Octopus Varios for reliability and price.

There are other better pumps out there and some are more expensive but for the average person those will be pretty good.

By the way didn't Ehiem move part of their manufacturing to China in like 2012 or 2013? Some of their pumps started to have issues from China. I thought you could tell which were which by the cat# number?
Are those pumps still being made there and how is the reliability of those pumps? I have not heard much about that for a while..

I’ve had a Tunze Silence 1073.040 for probably 7 years. I ran it for 2, cleaned it and put away for 3, and now have been running it on my current tank for 2 years. Never skipped a beat. Probably best money I’ve spent on any piece of reef equipment next to my dimmable Sunpower.

Love my Eheim 1262. Been running 4+ years now with NO issues. Clean it once or twice a year, and runs like new. I also stop/start it almost daily for feedings and have never had an issue.

Mag drive all day. Virtually bullet proof and in a pinch can be used for home defense then plugged back in to run your system lol. But in all seriousness mag drives are borderline indestructible

The two compact series are totally different. This 'new' compactON pump series is just a reboot of the old oem marineland utility pump models that went out of production years back. I actually think the new CompactON models are good pumps, possibly slightly better than the prior Compact+ series and are a tried and true design. I highly, highly doubt eheim made anything in the way of material improvements. They don't actually make the pumps. They likely just asked for the plastic to be made in their color of choice and their label printed and that's it. Not that I would care if Eheim didn't make any improvements - the old marineland utility pumps were solid units across the board. In fact, I still have an 8+ year old marineland 5000 pump running a client's reef tank. He refuses to replace it with a new model cause it still runs. And hey, I guess I can't blame him. Last time I opened it up for cleaning it was in perfect working order. The only pumps I'm aware of that are an eheim specific design spec and manufacture is the universal hobby series such as the 1260, 1262, etc.

Used pretty many back in the day and do not like them. I used them in my pond and aquarium. Loud and have start up issues.

Once I was sitting in my living room and the lights started dimming and I heard this sound coming out of my fish room. I run in there and black smoke and sparks are pouring out of the sump.



It put this black slick in my tank.. 30+ years reefing and the only major crash I ever had. Lost about a third of my coral.

The good news is I just got home. If it happened a hour ealier it probably would have burned the place down.

I have 3 Jebao pumps running at 5+ years without issue. I dont understand why there are so many haters other than they are inexpensive and Chinese. Never heard of one killing a tank...

Your pretty lucky then. My lfs which is very knowable and stopped carring them because they were getting 8 out of 10 returned. I do think they are better than they used to be but I do not trust them and my tank are too valuable to trust to a cheap pump. Most important peice of equipment is the main pump when you have a sump.

Askoll is a huge company. They make pumps for everything. The pump that pumps the water from the majority of dishwashers and washing machines are Askoll. The aquarium market is just a part of what they do. They are an OEM in the Aquarium market. Since most companies are after high profit margin, they don't regularly go to Askoll to have their pumps made.

As for how Vertex and RE get their pumps, it's not my place to divulge that info on a public forum. They are however made with a shorter cord than the Laguna. So it's not just right off the shelf. It used to be really easy for companies to hide their product origins but the internet has really made it easy for us to compare similar products and come to very probable conclusions.
