Is this even possible? I've read some info. about using magnets but the pieces I'm looking to put on the back glass are fairly small. Would I need to drill a hole or two in the rock to mount/secure the magnet(s)? and would magnets be the best way to go?

I've used super glue before to secure the magnet to the small rocks and it worked fine. With that said I also coated the magnets in about 5 layers of plasti dip and water still eventually got through. I found the magnets rusted several months later.
