hey, R2R!!
Want to get some advice/opinions here.
We are going to be moving states in a few months and are going to be in a place temporarily for 6-12 months before buying a home. Once we buy, we plan on getting a sweet custom tank but for the 6-12 months, I need a temporary set up.

moving the current tank isn’t really something we want to do - would rather sell it before moving.

my plan is to pick up a 40 breeder, do an OTB overflow into a DIY 20 gallon sump and hook up all the existing equipment to this new tank.

I have a Red Sea reefer 425 (88gallon display)
Light-medium stocked with coral
Fish list is:
long nose hawk fish
Kole tang
Vroliks wrasse
Red head Solon wrasse
Clown pair
Starry blenny

let me know what you think about this plan!

TLDR: we’re moving and want to move fish and coral from an 88gallon tank to a 40 gallon tank for 6-12 months. Is this feasible?

Other than the logistics of moving everything, that should work. With the smaller tank I’d opt for a lid.
Thank you. Absolutely will have a lid - probably just eggcrate but it works.

Benefit here is we can set the tank up at the new place in advance as well

Definitely a plus! I’ve had more fish than that in a 25-gallon for an extended period, so they should be peachy. What are you going with for a new tank? Red Sea again or something else like a Cade?

At this point I’m thinking I’m going to go with planet aquariums.
Big reason is none of the “big box” tanks have dual returns which is a must for the next tank I have.
Also, I’d really like an external overflow and a tank that’s taller than the big box tanks offer.
Plus, I really think I wanna just do a simple sump with a single baffle - sumps are so complicated for no reason IMO
