2017 is going to be a bit of a hardware year for me...there are a few things I'd like to upgrade on my 110g system, and I want to get something that I can take with me should I ever get the chance to upgrade beyond this tank. Currently I use a Jebao PP-15 for my main wavemaker, and a little Koralia 800 in the back opposite corner to move water in that area. The PP15 is okay, but I know the Jebaos tend to have a life span of just a couple years, so before this one stops I'd like to start saving for a better powerhead. I'm leaning towards a single MP40 or the new version of the Gyre, but I can't make up my mind. Who here has used both and would like to chime in? I'd really like your opinions.
The MP-40 worries me because of the rather large dry side. I have bookshelves on either side of the tank, so there's very little clearance (Clarence!). I can still use an MP40, but I'll either have to drill a large hole in a bookcase and sacrifice some space, or else stick it almost near the front glass pane. Neither option sounds good.
I'm leaning towards the Gyre, but I'm worried that my rockwork will make the "gyre" motion almost negligible. Since I have a lot of acros, that's a lousy thought. Plus the big black column of the reefready overflow might mess with the flow, don't you think? Take a look at the photos of the tank, see if you agree with me.
Sigh. Might have to just deal with the Jebaos again. I'd love your input, though.
Here's the tank. Right now the PP15 is on the right side of the photo, 2/3rds the way down, and the Koralia is hidden from view on the left back.
And the bookshelves I was talking about...
