Which would you use on the back wall of a 18 inch deep 90 gal? Looking to get some better front to back circulation. Presently using 2mp 49s on opposite side walls

What are the tank's dimensions? If it's a standard ninety "on it's side" then maybe it's 48" x 24" x 18"H?

The mp40 is good for about 24" from the pump in every direction, so hypothetically you should have it covered pretty well with two mp40's.

Can you show a pic of your tank?

Tank is 18 inches front to back 24 inches tall. With my present rock structure I am having difficulties with getting random water motion. Thought by adding a powerhead to the back I could get a more random flow pattern. Sorry for being he crummy pic

I have a five foot 90 gallon that's 18 inches deep as well and I've recently started playing with adding more flow by adding more powerheads (Dana Riddle's MACNA talk made me do it). My two main powerheads are two MP40's on either end. The additional powerheads I just added are a Jebao PP15.....way too powerful....and a Tunze 6015. The Jebao was too powerful to face pointing out, so that is currently parallel with the back wall. The Tunze is shooting straight towards the front glass, and if anything is slightly underpowered. I'd like to try a Jebao PP4, but I'm not sure if it would hold on my 1/2 inch glass. I decided to go with "regular" powerheads instead of MP's because I can hide them behind my rockwork. Here's a crappy picture I just took and you can't see these two added powerheads.

Having your powerheads facing each other is very often not the optimal way to run them since they end up, at least in part, where one is working against the other.

I would consider moving both pumps you have onto the back wall. This suits the vortech flow better if you can make it work.

Is there any chance your rock structure can either accommodate one pump on each side as is, or if not maybe can the rocks even be moved 6" or so to the left to help?

I ran a 90 standard just like you with two mp40s on the side walls and one mp10 on the back right side because my overflow was offcenter on the right. It worked great. Key is to make sure they're all the same level so the flows run into each other

IMO, 2x MP40s on the back wall would suite you better. I used 2 on my previous standard 90. It will give you greater random flow and if you use a controller, you'd be able to control even better. I believe in too much than not enough:) You can always dial it down if it's too much but a 10 is tuff to dial up. If you don't have both, I have a MP40 WQD for sale;)

I can definitely try this. Gonna try tomorrow :)
