Excited about my first ever reef build and looking forward to the journey. I had a 75 gallon freshwater with Angel's in the past and I got into some plant aquarium but because I'm in the military, I had to move often. Looking to retire soon and so now I wont have to worry about moving anymore so now I finally got the wife to approve of my long time dream of setting up a reef tank.

My goal would be at least have Nemo and Dori for the kids, LPS and some SPS, and other utilitarian habitatants.

Undecided on whether to go custom build with acrylic or purchase this old setup that they selling on craigslist. It's a 150 gallon 48Lx30Wx25H glass starfire, stand, glass sump, skimmer, T5 lighting with 10 Bulb and I got him to approve on 800 for everything. It's a little old with some scratch but need an advice on the setup.

My second option is to build my own with acrylic. I'm pretty handy and built my own sump on my 30 gallon sump on my last fresh water. Pricing the 1/2 inch acrylic, it will cost 600 to build the tank and sump, maybe another 100 for 2x4's and MDF for cabinetry for the stand.

I just need a sanity check, should I got for the used 800 system since I'm just starting out?

I'm also a little concern about yellowing of acrylic, besides being a scratch magnet that can be buffed out, what would be the advantage of an acrylic over a glass or vise versa.

If I was to go custom, it would be a 48Lx36Wx24H. Would three hydra 32 or two 64 be suffice?

I'm taking this really slow and I'm brimg as patient as I can, any advice would be great.

Do you think it's a gud deal for the use equipment or should I go custom?
