Hi guys, my gsp is not opening. It was doing so good then, suddenly, yesterday it closed, then it opened back up. Now, today, it has never opened, since the light switched on. Usually it will open a few hours before the light switches on, but it didnt this time. It is not being bothered by anything. I dont suspect my water params either, even though I hardly do any tests, because all of my other corals are fine.

Can somebody please help?

GSP is very hardy and someone even said that it was the sort that would even grow in the toilet, so that says how easy it is . Don't get me wrong. I do like it myself 😁. But once in a while, especially if the tank is not too matured, if it's disturbed, dipped with something, or being touched and burned, it can close up for a while. I would say: Don't worry about it. Leave it alone and see how it goes. One thing that I'd like to comment though: It appears you have it glued to your main rock with other corals. I'd say that it's not a good idea. Once it grows, it will grow like crazy and you will have a hard time controlling it. It will be almost impossible to scrub it off the rock then. So, I usually suggest to grow it on a separate rock so it will be easier to control and you will have no regret later on 😁.

Taking a look at your picture again, I wonder if it's getting stung by your mushrooms??

There's decent flow and lighting. Its not actually squeezed in the mushrooms. It is on a bumb on the rock, about 4cm from nearest mushroom and 3cm from nearest coral (zoas).

Edit: I actually didnt know mushrooms could sting. But it is well away from any mushrooms.

I’ve had mine on an island, coming up on four years and from time to time it just doesn’t open for a day. No clue but I know it’s fine. I wouldn’t worry about it. As @Mr. Mojo Rising stated , when it opens if the polyps aren’t waving move it to more flow.

Do you have clean up crew members that walk across it like its a lawn?
I have a hermit crab that walks on the gsp, but that is very rarely. I also have a trochus snail, but I have never seen it on my gsp, that doesnt mean it really has never gone there. The trochus blends in with the rocks so I dont pay attention to it. I also realised the temp shot almost 1 degree celcius lower than usual. Usually its 25.6°, but yesterday it went to 23.8°, and now its 24.2°.

The gsp still never opened, 3 days now. I'm starting to get a little worried. Because this is actually my second gsp. My first one was exactly like this, it did so good, then suddenly closed, and then it died. I really hope this one doesn't die.

If your tank params aren't atrocious, I would just let it be. Any gsp I have had would close up for a day or a few and then open up like nothing ever happened. If something is way off, another coral would also be acting weird. Give it some time, gsp refuses to die. It's the only thing in my tank that I never put a second though into.

Flow: SOBO SF-180 wavemaker 3000l/h

Now, params.
No3:<0.2

There are polyps so it isn't dead. I will say mine like much more flow and light than zoas and shrooms so yours may not be in a perfect spot.
I have it in a several tanks but it does the best in my SPS tank where it gets whipped back and forth by the flow and is sitting under 500 par at the top. This wall grew from a small frag not more than 2" It grows so fast I have to scrape it off the weir every two weeks.

Wow. Luckily I still have some coral glue. Looks like I am going to be moving my gsp.

If you do move it be patient afterwards. They can stay closed a long time after being handled.
I'll just mention this but years ago I couldn't keep GSP alive but I have no idea why. Now I have it in 4 tanks.

GSP and Xenia does that sometimes.

I used to have mats of GSP and they’ve all withered away slowly. They only exist on top of my overflow return now.

I would definitely raise the Nitrate and lower the Alk.

10-20 for nitrates and 8 for Alk

Ask the seller if they clipped it from the introverted colony… 🤔

I’m sorry, I honestly don’t have an answer for you. The moment just seemed too perfect to pass up on. I really hope it pulls through tho 🙏

Interesting. I've never been able to keep xenia long term. I have several beginner coral on my i can't keep list.
Yea Xenia and GSP are one of those people seems to struggle with ESPECIALLY since everyone else says they are weeds.

It makes the people who can’t have them thrive feel worse

I have xenia too, but it doesm't grow like weeds. It does grow fast, though. It just breaks up into little trunks and they just "walk" around.

Because my nitrates are so low, I have been overfeeding my inhabitants. Sometimes there'd even be pieces of prawn just floating around, lol. I will try to raise no3 and reduce alk.

Sure thing.
