Hey all. I'm getting a JBJ Nano Cube 6, and while I have short-term plans for it[school field trip, I'm gonna use it to house some stuff to watch for a while for a paper :nerd:], after I'm done with that I'm thinking of maybe doing a SPS reef in there. My question was, is the stock lighting on it enough for SPS? Thanks!

I really don't think sps in a 6g is gonna be a good idea even with the proper lighting:( also the stock lights wont be enough:(

You may be able to keep some of the lower light SPS such as montipora's and digi's but you will have issues keeping higher light SPS. If you wanted to keep some of the nicer and more light demanding SPS you could go with an LED spotlight, such as: Ecoxotic PAR38 LED Aquarium Lights. Simply remove the top off of your nano and you place this bulb over the tank. You can connect this bulb into any household socket, no special ballast required.

the problem with that idea is...i've got cats. over the years, i've had cats sitting behind the tank, eating algea tabs, sticking faces and paws into the tank and running off with a frag plug. the tanks have to be covered...or else, lol! i like the look of those spot lights, but i'm afriad the cats would be too naughty:tongue:

If you can't separate the cats from fish tanks you may have to choose one or the other :(

there is no way. i'm still at home, and my mom has had cats since she was born. and i love the furries too. so the tops stay on the tanks and we try to keep the cats on the floor, and everyone is [resonably] happy:neutral:.

Have you tried training the cats? I mean.. I've owned cats and they never get on anything they are not supposed to be on. It only took one cat peeing in the stove to have me jump on Google to figure it out.

yeah, the older ones are better about it. but we lost our oldest earlier this year, and the kitten....well, he still has a ways to go yet. i found him on top of the fridge the other day. the funny thing was, he knew he was in trouble and needed to get down, but he'd gotten himself stuck-the look on his fuzzy face! i wish i had a picture, it was so funny.
anyway, it's just not worth it to me to have the tanks un-covered. is there any mod on the hood i could do that doesn't require welding or the like?

nice!
when he came back from the vet after being fixed and de-clawed, one of the first things he did was go in my room and start drinking out of the fish tank(i was adding stuff so the top was up...figured he'd feel bad enough i didn't bother closing the door....) and i walk in and he's sitting there, drinking, with his paws in the saltwater....poor little guy started shaking his paws after a few minutes, i think he got he cuts pickled!!!!!

if the kitty every gets a big ole frag of zoa's and eats them ya probably wont have to worry about it getting back into the fish tank.
