I have about 3 or 4 SPS but I like LPS much better.

I think I prefer softies and LPS too (although I have very little LPS-just some acans). So much more movement. But when I see a beautiful SPS dominant tank, I think "Hmmmm, I'd like to have that!"

Wow! A whole year without a water change. I do 20% every 2-4 weeks. Ha! I guess theres much to be said about larger systems.
I don't think it has anything to do with system size. Although on a larger system it is easier to set up automatic dosing on a daily basis. I only dose 10ml a day for iron, vinager, iodine, potassium, & strontium. So a 30 gallon tank with simular needs would only need 1ml a day or 7ml a week. There are people that have gone years with out water changes. Look up the DSR method here. You can use elements avalible locally. The Triton method is also based on no water changes if I understand correctly.
