I am getting a new sump. the tank is about 180-200 gallons. I am trying to decided between a 6" "mechanical filter zone" where I could run a pad if needed, but likely place heaters/random equipment and a 12" refugium/grow out tank vs a 10" "mechanical filter zone" and a 18" refugium/grow out tank.

I dont rely on mechanical filtration or refuguium in my tank. the mechanical filtration gives me the option to run pads or grow out some SPS if needed in that zone, vs a large huge (which is hard to access) will either grow chaeto or be a mini frag tank where I can grow stuff out/let corals heal

Get whatever is best for access and frag growing, this is your stated focus in those areas.

I would be cautious about growing coral in splash zones, they are challenging to light and constant turbulence may not be the best conditions for many frags.

Salt creep can also impact the decision. Get the biggest that has the best access.
