I purchased some manganese sulfate monohydrate which is 32% manganese. I'd like to use this to maintain a level of around 1ug/l in my 100g system. Having trouble figuring out how to mix this up to give me a solution that is easy to dose. Anyone got any ideas?

Curious - when you say 'its 32 percent manganese' do you mean its 32 percent manganese sulfate monohydrate' or actually 32 precent manganese? It would be helpful to know the exact product you have and what company?

This is what I have.

Here is my thoughts. 1 gram should contain 320mg of manganese. So 0.1 grams should have 32mg. If I dissolve 0.1 grams into 1000ml of rodi, I should have a solution with a concentration of 32ug/ml. My system volume is 100 gallons, or 379 liters. If I want a concentration of 1ug/l in my system, I need to dose 11.8ml of my solution. Does this sound accurate? Math is not my strong suite haha.

We can determine how to dose to add 1 ug/L easily (as you did correctly), but how often you need to dose that in a reef tank is a different issue that may require trial and error dosing and ICP measurement.

Thank you. I do monthly icp testing, so I plan to watch it that way. I just didn't know if anyone knows how quickly changes can be made without causing issues. For example, we know that raising alk by more than 1dkh/24hrs is a bad idea.

Here is a comment - and I would lie @Randy Holmes-Farley to comment. Is it worth it? i.e. monthly ICP tests, etc etc. I never dose any trace elements - I have a successful tank. Its not just about the Mn - but the whole question about many of these elements - hopefully @Randy Holmes-Farley will weigh in

The think we have very little info on is what range of, say, manganese, is actually needed. I agree that my tank seemed fine without dosing it. Might it have been better with it? Hard to know without experimenting.

How did the alpha chemicals stuff work out for you? Is it a good product to make Mn solution?

How safe is this AC's manganese sulfate monohydrate for dosing? I found the SPEC sheet their site, https://alphachemicals.com/msds___specs
It said animal feeding grade, but
Google said both Lead (Pb) and Arsenic (As) are highly toxic to fish and other aquatic life in aquariums

I don't know much about chemicals. Is it safe to use?

@Randy Holmes-Farley would you mind sharing your thoughts? Thank you for help.

if you cannot buy the types i recommend (such as food grade manganese gluconate), then this one is likely fine. the lead and arsenic are limit numbers and are very low since you will already be dosing a low amount.

There are a lot of diy recipes in the archive for suitable forms. Many of the manganese forms are summarized here, including the one you bought.
