Need help with plumbing! Quick question

For some reason I'm terrible at figuring out plumbing lol. So I have some questions since this is only the 2nd tank I've drilled and plumbed myself. I'm looking for a ball valve or gate valve in schedule 40 and my return requires 3/4" tubing. So do I Oder 3/4" ball valves or 1"? I need 3/4" to slip inside the ball valve. Does 3/4" slip into 1" or 3/4" into 3/4"? This probably sounds like a dumb question but I tried at Lowes and it was hard to get anything to fit right lol.

1" slip means you'll be buying 1" pipe. Don't worry, I've bought so many wrong sized pvc pieces because I didn't double check or just thought, oh yeah, that's 3/4....
