Good thing I only feed meat once a week. Usually he receives nori and omega flakes.

No prob. Hope it recovers soon for you. He also said that's by tangs eating too much meaty food it can contribute to HLLE so he switched for a full veggie diet and added veggies like peas, carrots, broccoli, spinich, brusslesprouts, etc.

+1 what he said .. i got mine on a veggie diet and some flake foods with garlic in it .. i feed meaty foods about every 2 weeks .. i feed them carrots .. broccoli .. spinach .. it really helps to try and keep all fish off meaty foods so much ..

I'll give the peas and carrot a try. Not something I thought would be ok but will give it a try. I appreciate it.

My fish love carrots. I take a pealer and cut them in to long thing strips and then put them in the algae clip. They mow them right down. The guy who feeds the mix of veggies puts them in a food processor and chops them up a bit and then dumps the mix in the tank. He also feeds strawberries once or twice a month as a treat.

Very nice!!!!!!!!!! I really like making my own food. Carrots will be first on my list. All I hope is my chevron will be able to handle carrots. Usually bristle tooth species can't eat sheets of nori and larger things that other tangs have no issue with. I break the nori apart or let my naso shread it like small flake size pieces that are avaiable to the chevron.

im going to have to try the strawberries never thought about them .. i use a veggie clip .. i really dont blend anything up but i will have to try that some time if i buy a new blender cause mine is pretty well used on milkshakes ..

Well... I tried carrots tonight and no luck. Shaved 'em pretty thin and placed them in a veggie clip. All 3 tangs and tribal blenny tried it and moved on after spitting back out.

if they were raw id imagine they might of been abit to hard.
the only veggies i have really ever heard used was par boiled.

fish&corals: He/she is ok. HLLE has completely seemed to stop. He still shows the signs, but I believe it may be starting to get better (fingers crossed). As for pulling the plug on a chevron, I would if the price was right. Some places have them priced high, but some have good prices as well. I paid $100 for mine in Tampa and that was afetr I had the store owner show me he was eating (just fyi... some bristle tooth tangs have mouth damage and have trouble eating). He showed no signs that day and still dosen't. I will be getting another soon for another system. This system will house a chevron and black longnose sailfin. Keep me posted if you get one.=)

nixer: My bad. Your right. They were raw. Maybe tonight I will try throwing some in with the steak fajita I'm cooking! He only eats omega flakes and small pieces of rogers reef food. Not sure why. He has no issues eating, it just seems that he is unsure of each bite. We'll see tonight!!!

yea no where i would order from i help out in a LFS here in town so i would be getting a really good deal on her/him .. glad to hear hes coming around .. just went and did tank maint this morning before i leave tomorrow afternoon for the keys .. checked on her tangs .. the hippo is coming around looking better .. her yellow looks like it has stopped for the most part will see how it goes with what im giving them to help and if it works will be a happy reefer ..

Have fun in the Keys, ain't been there in a few years. Glad to hear tangs on your end are doing better.

Update: I'm not sure, but my chevy is either getting better or worse (imo, worse) in the head area, but all fins are good. He has been eating new life spectrum pellets, nori, rogers reef food, and omega flakes. These are soaked in extreme garlic and ammino omega. No carbon in the system since begining of noticable marks. No gfo, just a sump pump, skimmer, grounding probe, and powerheads/wave makers. FYI... my 2 other tangs show no signs and all 3 have been together for a good amount of time. Thoughts what is still causing this to continue?

Pics aren't good thru camera phone and he is FAST!!!!!!!

Bump for any thoughts???? Would going bb be better incase carbon is trapped within the sand?

I wouldn't worry about any carbon trapped in the sand, in fact I wouldn't be so quick to blame carbon. Carbon dust was the problem according to the recent research that was published not carbon. Carbon dust from not rinsing the carbon well before use. If I remember correctly they also used rinsed carbon in the study and had no higher incident than not running carbon. I have always run carbon and have always rinsed it, and have always had tangs in my tanks. Never have I had HLLE.

Thanks. I wasn't looking forward to removing it. I just can't stand having my hands tied and not being able to help. :(
