Need to speak with someone from Canada please!!!

I'm desperately needing to speak with someone who lives in Canada and has first hand knowledge about their Car Ins laws.
I live in the U.P. of Michigan. While on my way to my very first frag swap I was side swiped by a semi truck driver. Who just so happened to be from Canada. The driver was cited for improper lane change, therefor 100% responsible for the accident. Michigan has a Mini Tort Law. Which entitles me to $1000.00 as a PL/PD carrier.
My StateFarm agent contacted April Ins of Canada and was told they do not honor Michigan Laws. To date we've heard nothing else.
I would like to know if I have any other recourse? It's scary to think/know that Canadian truck drivers us Michigan as a short cut to save themselves both time and money but do not adhere to our laws :(

That's why Canada makes you pay when pulled over.

You can always take them to small claims court here in MI and get a ruling against them (for your deductible) but good luck collecting the $$. Another downer about MI no fault insurance system, everyone pays for their own. You will still be stuck with the deductible, and up to your insurance co to go after them for the rest.

Doesn't sound positive but I still have to try something.....I'm wondering......what if someone get's killed? What then? Can Canadian driver's get away with vehicular homicide in the U.S. because they don't have to adhere to our laws?

If a crime was committed then they would of been arrested and placed into legal system. It all comes down to how much time you want to spend on it, and how much is your time worth?
