I have never had much luck in the reefing hobby. I am trying to change that
What I currently have is a 60 cube tank with a sump under the tank. Filter sock and protein skimmer in the sump. I have neglected the tank for a few months and am not going to try and get it built better.
I am planing on installing 2 100 gallon rubbermaid troughs in my basement. One for the sump and the other for the fuge, I hate bringing water up in 5 gallon buckets. i am thinking this will make it easier.
Question is do i keep the tank water I currently have? Get rid of half?
I don't want to have to deal with the tank cycling again.

Also I am guessing the pump will do 500 gph is that too much to go through the fuge?

Thanks for the input

Andy

Changing the water won’t cause you to cycle again. Very little bacteria live in the water column, it’s in your rock and sand.

Hi Andy and welcome to R2R!

Looking after a reef tank is all about maintaining stable water parameters, and you can’t neglect it otherwise you will probably/will have issues

The following is a very good guide for you

https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/the-supreme-guide-to-setting-up-a-saltwater-reef-aquarium.138750/

As far as the water is concerned it depends on the quality of it and the parameters as to whether or not to keep it and also the current occupants.

If it were me, my personal preference, if your looking to start a fresh I would use clean water like a large water change in the system and if you need some help with the cycle maybe add one of the bottled bacteria. I can recommend ATM Colony but there are many others if you need a boost.

The pump does sound powerful but you would have to try it and adjust as necessary

Check the specs on the pump and measure the distance from the pump to the tank. Every foot the pump has to push water the GPH starts to drop. For example the Mag 9.5 is rated for 975 gph but at 5’ of head pressure it drops to around 650gph. Most pump manufacturers have this data with each pump.
