I use a piece of 1/2 inch pvc thru the lid with a 45 deg cut on the bottom. Then feed the tubing in til it hits bottom.

And how do you hold the pvc

You dont. It sticks out the top 6 or 8 inches.
Cut a 7/8" hole in your brute lid and poke it thru.
