Nervous about golden dwarf moray eel

Two day and half days ago i picked up a new dwarf moray eel, and on the first day within an hour it was already peeking its head out, but in the last 30 hours i have not seen the eel once.

Inhave check the overflows and the filter socks/sump and its no where to be found.
Ineven checked the tank at night and i didnt see it. Coudlent find it carpet surfing either

Is it common for a new eel to go into hiding completly for the first few days? Even feeding the tank he doesnt seem to come out. Should i give it a few more days before i start looking for it in the rock work?

Your going to have to wait it out.

Please get a screen top too. They are escape artist.

Golden dwarves are absolutely amazing eels. Yes hiding for a few days is normal. Especially after being added to the tank.

They can be a bit tricky to feed, almost refusing everything you offer. The best thing I've found to try are calimari tentacles cut into one, or two small tentacles each and offer on a feeding stick or with a set of long stainless tongs. Place the calimari in the flow and your eel will come out and shake his or her head smelling out its meal. They have horrible eyesight so bring it close but dont scare it.

Oh and ABSOLUTELY cover every gap on top of the tank. They can and will find a hole to escape from.

Thanks for the reply, good news i grab a piece of shrimp witha feeding stick near where i last saw him and behold he was there came out and instantly grabbed the food.

Very glad i got this guy, absolute show piece althought i dont see him often

Here’s my dwarf moray, he went into hiding for a couple days when I first got him as well. But as time went on he’s almost always sticking his head out of his pvc hide.

That's a very interesting color you have. Very yellow with a fw black patches on its side. Almost like the yellow variant of Gymnothorax miliaris. I think I see a blue eye and it's much too small to be a golden tail.

Yes he has the piercing blue eyes with the vertical black slits, so I'm about 99% positive he is a dwarf but a very uncommon coloration.

I will go a few days sometimes without seeing mine. He likes to hang out in a few spots and come feeding time it's kind of like whack a mole trying to find where his head is sticking out. If you want to try feeding I have found if I feed my frozen to the other fish the smell will entice him to pop his head out so you can try and feed him. Some days he's just not interested, like last night. You'll start to figure out what their behavior is when they want to eat and when they don't.
