I'm trying to setup a new tank for ultra budget. what would be better a canister or a hob filter? I'm planning on getting a tank for ultra budget without built in filtration what filter type and filter would be able to handle a small setup for clownfish, zoas etc

Have you considered an all in one (AIO)? I have an innovative marine fusion 15. Display is roughly 10-11 gallons. It included a cheap pump all for around $100. You would want to grab a Jecod/Jeboa ELW-3M or similar for circulation.

Hob skimmer in my opinion. Live rock and sand for denitrification. Regular water changes and you’d be set.

My LFS has been running numerous 20G “quarantine” tanks (display tanks which get new livestock from shipments regularly, and thus aren’t plumbed together/to sumps to prevent any parasite/disease/pest spread) on HOB filters only for a decade and a half!

It can be done, but you need to maintain the filter religiously to have long-term success!

My 15 gallon has no filtration at all, just weekly 30% water changes. You don't need any filtration for a small nano tank, just keep a low bioload be careful not to overfeed and maintain weekly water changes. A 15 gallon tank costs about $20, and any 50 watt light will work.

Hob's and canister's provide very minimal filtration on salt tanks anyway, they are not important like they are with freshwater tanks.
