I went out Saturday and bought myself a Nikon D5100. I've always had a point and shoot so this is new for me. A lot of reading, learning and practicing to do! I have the 18-55mm lens that came with it plus I bought the 55 - 200mm lens. Did I get the right equipment for taking macro shots? Any input and pointers would be most appreciated!

Good equipment, but unfortunately no. You'll need a true Macro Lens to take actual Macro photography.

I own a 5100 as well. Until you get a macro lens you can crop/zoom your current pics to get a macro look

I know a guy who takes awesome macro shots with extension tubes(a bit cheaper)... don't ask me how he does it but I'm sure someone else on here can explain it.:)

I got mine at Best Buy. They have a package deal for the camera, battery, charger, stock lens (15-55mm), 55-200mm lens, 8G memory card, and a carrying case for it all for $999. Without the 55-200mm lens, memory card and case, it is $799. I thought that was a pretty decent deal.

the 18-55 will shoot some nice Macro shots! For a macro I went with the Tamron 90MM, it's been very good to me! Consider getting Nikon Capture NX2 for processing raw images - it does color correction under heavy Blue which lightroom doesn't like.

this is one of the first pictures I ever shot with my 3100 using the 18-55 lens:

This is a pic I took using the 18-55 lens that came with the 5100. I'm in the same boat as you as far as christmas goes, can't wait for a macro, but for now crop/zoom works well.

WOW! Both of those are great pics! I am def planning on getting NX2. And thanks for the tip on the 90MM Blurry. Do you have any pics using your Tameron 90MM? Show them off..I'd love to see!

I can't imagine what that would look like with a macro lens. It has awesome color!
