Hi there,
I just purchased a new Hanna Checker for phosphorus and I received a reading of 1ppb. Is this high for my tank? What should this reading be for a healthy tank.
Thanks

With the phosphorus checker, you take the number that pops up and multiply by 3.066, then divide the result by 1000 to get the phosphate level.

Ie. (Z x 3.066)/1000= phosphate

The optimum level is debatable, but I aim for 0.03 to 0.09

BTW, you live in my hometown!

Here is a conversion chart you can print: https://cdn.reefs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Phosphate-1.jpg

Hanna says the accuracy is ±5 ppb ±5% of reading. So for example if your reading on the checker is 10, the actual values could be as low as (10 - 5 - 0.5) = 4.5, or as high as (10 + 5 + 0.5) = 15.5. Using the chart that would mean a phosphate value somewhere in the range of 0.014 to 0.047.

Thanks for the info. So why do I still have a bit of cyano?

Water parameters tend to be poor predictors of nuissance organism growth.
