New to these forums - I've been keeping reef tanks since 2003 and didn't spend much time in forums over the last 5 years or so. Found that Reef Central has minimal engagement for smaller tanks and found this forum on recommendation from someone in local club (GIRS).

Seems like I never take too much of a break since starting saltwater in 2003 - there were +/- 8 months in 2008 then this recent break from June 2018 until now when I sold my 120 due to a move to W. Des Moines. Really wasn't planning on starting again but I found a sweet deal on this tank and my wife and daughter really love clowns so here I am.

Stumbled access someone selling their 29 gallon Oceanic Biocube on FB market and couldn't pass it up! Came with tank, stand, hood, heater, pump, In Tank filter, 30 pounds live rock, 10 pounds sand, test kits, 2 new replacement Coralife power compact bulbs (10k and 420 actinic), food, etc.

It wasn't perfect as the glass has noticeable scratches on all three sides and the hood was missing the cooling fans. I ordered a new AC to DC power supply and new fans to get it up and running.

I purchased the tank 12/23 and cleaned it up Christmas Day as it was 60 degrees outside. Cleaned up well with a vinegar and water solution. Rinsed the existing sand until it was clean and sprayed the rock with a garden hose. Previous owner stated the tank had been cycled (drained day I picked it up) but the rock didn't have any growth or critters so I'm comfortable it was clean and pest free.

Thursday 12/26 I set it up with fresh Instant Ocean (160g bucket for $32 @ Petco), 20 pounds Carib Sea Arag-Alive sand (never purchased live sand before) existing sand, small amount of rock that came with it and the rest of the rock from my stockpile.

My plans are 4 - 6 fish (clowns, Dotty Back, goby - undecided on specific colors) and small clean up crew. Corals will be softies and possibly LPS - looking forward to finding zoas and frogspawn (hopefully some of my old stock) but probably not SPS (probably). Not going to run a skimmer and want to keep it simple with a 5 gallon water change each week with new filter floss - we'll see how long that lasts!

Fast forward a few weeks and I noticed a significant amount of salt creep between the bottom of the tank and the stand along with water on the lower left side. As the tank was new I didn't know if it was leaking or if the stories I found online discussing excessive salt creep with this hood were accurate. I also failed to leak test before setting up (newbie mistake) but it was broken down the day I picked it up (owner had it on hardwood floors with no staining) so I didn't think much of it.

I found another tank locally and decided to swap. Replacement is a Coralife 29g HQI (double ended metal halide) giving me the opportunity to use one of my Chinese black box LEDs I had leftover from my 120g RR.

Tank is exactly 30 days old today (10 days post tank swap), has 5 frags, 2 clowns, and is at the end of the cycle.

Here are some videos of the problems with the old tank and swap to the new (took 1 hour 45 minutes total time). After swapping I leak tested the original tank for 3 days and it didn't leak so the saltcreep from the Oceanic 29 Biocube is real.

Day 31.

Performed another water change yesterday and will move to a 5 gallon change every other weekend which would still be close to 50% total volume every 30 days.

Verified nitrates have dropped to 5 so I'm getting close to the end of the cycle. Ammonia has remained at zero and I never saw nitrites. With diatoms and hair algae added 5 trochus snails to start with - I know hermits are also popular but I've always lost snails to them. Algae should disappear (the RO is at zero TDS) once die off is processed.

Had a typical hair algae outbreak after the diatoms and kept it under control with weekly 5 gallon water changes along with manually removing the algae from the rocks.

Here's a before and after from early February:

Week later the hair algae didn't return so while there were a few stragglers, the tank appeared to be close the the end of this part of the cycle.

While growth shots aren't that special, I did notice some growth over the last 30 days (January 21 through February 19) which tells me my tank is healthy. While I do some testing, over the years I've learned to rely on what I see as a gauge for overall tank health.

2 of 5 specimens shown below and first one was a heavily discounted coral as it was distressed when I bought it.

New addition and a hitchhiker.

Wednesday February 26th I swapped some old equipment for a Cali Tort frag. Tank is young (60 days) but it was a great deal and this is supposed to be one of the hardier specimens.

While acclimating the coral, I saw a hitchhiker that surprised me and appears to be a stomatella snail. I started this tank with mostly dry rock (dry for over a year), live sand and a few pieces of existing rock that came with the tank, however I rinsed that rock and let it sit outside for a few days. It's possible this snail survived in the existing rock however most likely came in on a frag. I assume they grow quickly as I examine frags before putting them in the tank (removed a starfish from palys) and this is sizable - I've never freshwater dipped frags.

Another hitch hiker in the form of an aiptasia. Hit it with vinegar and baking soda last Thursday (out of the tank) and it was back with a friend Sunday. This time I used boiling water and a syringe in the tank. If it comes back I'll find my kalk.

Had my first fatality

Haven't been posting as I've been busy with our "new normal" but 2 weeks ago I picked up a couple more zoas and a frag of digi that didn't make it. Digi, in my experience, has always been fairly hardy and although this is a newer tank (12/26/2019) it seems to be stable and I have a cali tort which is fine. You can see it starting to starting to perish in the first photo dated 4/2/2020.

I did purchase 25 gallons of 0 TDS RO 2 weeks ago and will do a 5 gallon WC tomorrow after checking params.

Sorry for the poor pics - I recently changed from a Google Pixel 3a to an iPhone 11Pro and can't figure out the camera.

5 month update - bubble algae and aiptasia!

Slightly elevated nitrates (<10) and struggling to keep alk above 7 without dosing - Instant Ocean??

Pics from this morning after cleaning and changing 5 gallons last night.

I’m planning on changing 5 gal every 2 weeks, dosing to keep alk up and reducing my feeding significantly and only once a day.

Like your scape! I had a 18" cubed nano for 2.5 years. Moved it at one.
Ran black box 80% blue 20% white 10" above the tank. Great light for a nano.
I dosed esv 2 part and did 3 gallons a week water changes.
Keep up the good work and pics.

Thank you!

I have to force myself to not be lazy - previous tank was established for 5+ years and was 120g so better dilution.

I have a 120 and 45 frag system now.
My nano was my first tank after being out of the hobby since 01.
I had tanks from 89-01 when my daugher was born and we moved to Norcal.
Just walked into lfs to look and went home with my nano lol.
Here is my 120 now almost 11 months old.

Here is a couple pics of my nano.
Gsp and all coralline died when I moved it. I ran a 150w MH for awhile but actually liked the black box more.
After the move it was a holding/frag tank as I setup my 120.
It now sits in the garage as I could not give it away lol.
I do use the stand as a equipment cabinet until I find a better solution for my frag/lagoon system.

Just read through, tank looks good. Love the HQI have one myself. Are you using the regular Instant Ocean or the Reef Crystals? I use the Reef Crystals and my alk sits around 10

Yes hqi. It sits in the closet with my black box and 2 hqi de 250 watt mh with lumen brite fixtures all new. Went with a used T5 system on my 120 and frag/lagoon tanks.
Will use them eventually lol.

Thanks!

I use regular IO as the theory has always been that RC has more elements, but in an established reef tank you'll probably need to dose something and the extra elements would be consumed within a few days.

I went from T5s (ATI/Geismann 6 bulb) to black box on my 120 - LEDs are less expensive in the long run but I preferred the look for T5s. If I ever get a larger tank I'll use a LED/T5 combo.

I had a tendency to heavily stock my 120.

Nice 120. I have over 50 corals in my current 120.
I run 8 T5's on my 120 in an ati fixture and a 6 bulb giesemann on my 45.
50/50 b+c+.
I always have to laugh at the T5 cost thing.
$20 a week for 6-8 weeks for bulb replacement. One bulb is about half the cost of a decent frag lol.

2 months since last post - bubble and lettuce algae are getting worse.

Assuming it came in on a frag. Haven’t added anything for several months and I’m wondering if the rock is leeching something to fuel it. I’ve been doing 5 gallon water changes every 2 - 3 weeks with zero TDS RO/DI. Thinking I’ll move to a 2.5 gallon change weekly - I’ve also got a small diatom outbreak which is strange at 7 months.
