Hey Everyone,

Over the past few weeks or so I got connected with a local reefer and picked a few new SPS pieces for my tank that I am pretty excited about. They are all doing well and already showing some growth. I would love to see your colonies of these specific corals so that I can have a good understanding of how they will grow out!

Here is what I got….
WWC Yellow Tip Acro
Forest Fire Digitata(one of my favs so far)
Jason Fox Purple Forest
WWC Jelloshot
Papa Smurf Acro(believe it’s acropora)
WWC Summers Eve
Strawberry Shortcake Acro

In the photos you will see the strawberry shortcake in front of the forest fire digitata and the Jelloshot in front of the large Summers Eve frag. Of the two photos of single frags the piece with the most polyps should be the yellow tip and the rounder looking frag should be the JF Purple forest. The yellow tip and the purple forest seem to be the two pieces that have colored up the least so far.

Great pieces to get started with! I started with similar frags 2 years ago. Here’s what they look like now!

Wow everything looks awesome! What is the coral in that second picture? I have a frag of that I got from a LFS mystery frag and never found out what it was.

I think so, started as this frag.

Yup looks like birdsnest to me, I tried it twice when I first added coral to my tank because it was listed as beginner coral. Both bleached on me even though my parameters looked good at the time. I actually want to find a cool piece of birdsnest to grow out just because I failed with it before. Nice growth!

You should be able to easily find colony shots of most of those. If there is one that you cannot find, then just hollar. I have never heard of Summers Eve, but that does not mean anything... not only do I not keep up with WWC corals, they do a lot of chopping and naming and some never get to colony sized.

I know I could have googled it, I thought it would be fun to have interaction from fellow members as to also have the ability to open up further conversations about each type of coral. Similar to the purpose of the forum.

I also find it interesting I couldn’t find anything on WWC Summers Eve. The reefer I got it from had a 300g established system so maybe that type or name phased out.

It is common for WWC to get in a colony, chop it up into many pieces, name it and then it is rarely heard from again. They do this with wild stuff as well as other people's stuff (rename, it seems). Some WWC pieces have stuck around for a long time and are good pieces - Jello Shot is a typical red table similar to Atlantis Christmas Mirabilis, ORA Red Planet or many more. If you want to get a lot of WWC pieces, just search and see if they end up being anything before you pay too much, unless you just love it... lots of what they sell is just blah that fades into nothingness, IMO... but you could find one of the good ones. There are other acropora vendors that do not name so many pieces and do a better job of selecting things that are a bit better than average.

Awesome thanks for this, I have ordered from WWC before but it was a long time ago and not SPS. How would you recommend going about figuring out the actual name for the coral ? Like I said in the post these were all from a local reefer but if I do go through a vendor in the future do you have any recommendations
