just got it as a gift. Can I just use it? Or do I have to figur out how to update it?

You can just use it. I got one this morning and you may want to just go ahead and update it. Setting it up with your PC is much simpler than the head unit.

I don't think there has been an update in awhile. Chances are it is already up to date.

Anyone bother getting any updates? I keep thinking about getting the salinity and ph monitor kit and maybe the net module.
