Unfortunately its one of the worse skimmers out there But see if it pulls gunks or just bubbles all day like most of them do. Best is Icecap, aquaMaxx or Bubble Magnus

I have a 90g tank currently being used as a freshwater tank that is drilled with a eshopps sump and I have a eshopps protein skimmer as well. My plan was to convert it back when summer hits and build a pond for my koi and turtle. Could I get away with just regular maintenance every 2 weeks with the canister setup?

Depends on bioload from fish and amount fed

The advice I would give has already been given. One thing you definitely need is more hiding places/rock for your fish. Most of them will want to hide after the lights go out and this will help with stress. Good luck and welcome to R2R!

I just did a 10.5 gallon water change and cleaned my canister.
