So I just mixed up a new batch of salt water, clean tube RO/DI water, new box of salt. Took a powerhead from my frag tank, scrubbed it off with fresh water. Now it kind of smells funny. What would you do, use it or toss it? I do run carbon in the system it's going in.

Is it a new ro/di system?....if so did u flush out the system?....its up to you if you put it in but personally I wouldn't risk it. Your probably better off making a new batch of saltwater. What brand of salt are you using?

Thanks, yes it is a system and I think was the power head being dirty. I ended up dumping it and soaking the power head. I use ESV and it was a new box I just opened. Thanks again

Crazy thing is I changed out my DI resin and the smell went away. It was still reading 0 so I didn't think it was the problem cause I've never ran into this before

No, Yeah you can soak the power head in distilled vinegar for a bit n that usually cleans them up pretty well.

Ya, that's what I did and it made no difference so that's when I went to my RO system and changed the DI, so weird, never had that happen before

DI resins will very often give off a fishy smell when the resin is brand new and especially when it is nearing exhaustion. It is called amines and is very noticable to the human nose at levels down to 5 parts per billion.

That's crazy, never knew that, all the years I've been making water I've never experienced that. The DI resident was nearing its end but theTDS was still reading zero so I thought nothing of it. thanks for the info
