New Spawned Acros?

more like professionally bred than lab grown, id say what we do currently is more lab grown and what they do is more natural- its natural for corals to mate, its not natural for corals to consistently be fragged out over and over, cloning i believe actually has a drop off of dna/rna structure at a certain point but i believe it may not be present in coral, im still studying ^.^

Saw this the other day, very cool, you can see the result of healthy breeding, the animals look alot nicer, id buy one

I kid you not, the frag plug stole the show for a moment (for me at least :D)

Most of the frags seem to cost around €300 ($351) to €1000 ($1171) by the way.

Thats pretty cool and yes the frag plugs are very cool as well. I know I have heard/saw videos of others breeding corals (acros) as well not sure who though but I am pretty sure there is at least 1 in the states. Will they be selling their babies as well I dont know. Its interesting that they provide their own symbionts wonder if they will be trying to branch out into other colors as well like reds or if thats even possible, seems most of their stock is blue or green or some shade of those colors.

I don't mean to take away from the benefits of farm spawned and raised corals, but the title is misleading.

There is no modern genetic engineering going on at Sci reef. It is simple sexual reproduction (at least that is what their web site says), as happens naturally in the ocean.

Modern genetic engineering involves selective addition or removal of genes from an organism in ways that are not simple reproduction.

What they are doing is super cool. Granted Randy is correct and they are not “genetically modifying” anything. They are just creating an environment conducive to aquaculture’s spawning. I think the idea is that we will see more genetic variance due to this as opposed to cutting/fragging which is basically cloning. One a side note they also make these super cool tent things (scientific term) that they sell and you can do it yourself. Also they do get corals to spawn way more often.

Reef therapy did an episode on coral spawning where the speaker said anyone who's essentially got a stable system and a solid light schedule with no night time light interference can have spawning corals within a years time.

Great to see "ex situ" or captive sexually reproduced commercially available (at least somewhere)! In the US the Steinhart Aquarium and the Florida Aquarium as well as Richard Ross in his home aquariums are sexually reproducing corals and as I understand have had 2nd generation colonies spawn.

Steinhart was the one I was thinking about. Someone did a youtube video on their systems and to some extent their procedures.
I have seen some of the stuff from Richard Ross too.
Also someone (was it Richard?) spawning torches regularly. I am not sure(dont think thats right). Memory gets worse every year......

they are crispr / RNA editing *although crisprs well known there is other methods* editing the spare genetic code by inserting an inert tagline/sequence so they can always see the edit in offspring (if they arent it would surprise me because AIMS and others are) (I will be breeding mushrooms & nems soon)

im actually a gen practice tech by day and a genetics wizard in my free time
