Hey yall I’m considering getting a new 75 gallon tank in the new bedroom I just moved into. However there is a door separating bedrooms which stays closed and I drew a diagram showing how the two rooms connect. Currently I have a 40 gallon tank highlighted orange in my old room. In my new room I plan to add a 75 gal tank and I know this is over 650-700 lbs. any thoughts from contractors or handy men/women. I am worried about the integrity of the floor. Which is also why I am considering putting the new tank along the edge of my house so it goes opposite length of the floor joist.

I'm not an engineer or archetect, but I have a 75 gallon on our second floor, been running (freshwater) for about 13 years now. It does sit against a wall, and runs perpendicular to the floor joists under it, and I haven't had any problems.

Good luck!

I’m thinking as long as it’s opposite of floor joist I should be fine!

That's what I would think too, but since I'm not a professional engineer or architect, maybe just double check to be sure ;-)

I wouldn't be overly concerned about the load especially if you put it perpendicular to the floor joists. What additional weight are you looking to add? Sump, top off container, other heavy furniture in the room?

Honestly if you get too heavy you actually have to worry about shear load when running perpendicular, but I wouldn't be concerned with that weight. Now I wouldn't go putting a gun safe next to it. If you are really concerned you can stiffen your joists by putting in blocking in the floor joists if it's on the first floor and you have access to the crawl space. This will definitely add stiffness. For my 150 I actually stiffened the TJIs with additional plywood to reduce the bounce in the floor and added some blocking to help distribute the load and added jack studs in the wall to essentially frame in an additional opening. However, I was putting the tank dead smack in the wall underneath a load-bearing wall on the first floor (look through tank).

I did a test and had 4 family members including me sitting on the stand as well. My dad and me weigh 400 combined and my mom and sister are probably closer to 250. Considering the weight would be more evenly distributed in a fish tank I am confident in the stand
