New Tank first time ever

Can I only put live or dry rock in the tank. I got a piece of clay like rock but when washed it absorbs water like clay that’s really nice I want to put it in the tank (not really to grow corals but more for just aesthetics is it okay?

Remember nothing happens fast in the ocean. Take it slow.

I second this sentiment, every time I have rushed things it has backfired. Patience. :)
