Sump help needed...

Hi all im also looking for info as i have a 45 gal reef tank running with a canister filter and its great but i want to upgrade to a larger tank and was wandering what i would need as never done a sump before but believe a sump would be the best way to go... going up to a 220 gal and wandering what equipment i would need please

Are you thinking about buying a premade sump or buying a tank and adding baffles?

If you are going to use a sump, you will need to get a return pump(for getting water into and out of the sump to the display tank) and protein skimmer to start with.

the basic equipment to run a reef

- Return pump (sump to tank)
- Wavemaker (tank)
- Heater (sump)
- overflow and emergency overflow (tank to sump)
- filter equipment as you wish (media, reactor, refugium, protein skimmer,…)
- A good maintenance discipline

The rest in my opinion is luxury and just makes your life easier :)

Im buying a used sump that came with a tank the same size as im.getting but it doesnt come with any equipment

Baffles are just the panels that divide the different areas of the sump and direct the flow of water.

Havent got anything yet just asking for advice as im upgrading from a 45gal with external filter to a 220gal with sump but when i get the 8ft tank home ill take some

Right i have my set up going but just confused as to what bacteria to add to start my cycle??? Any ideas???

If you didn't add any live rock (looks like all of that is dry rock) then you'll need to get an ammonia source (like Dr. Tim's Ammonium Chloride) and nitrifying bacteria such as Dr. Tim's One and Only or Fritz TurboStart.

I added a little Live rock to sump but yea mostly dry rock.. Black Caribsea live sand

I have a filter running my little 170litre tank is it worth putting some of the filter material from that in as this new tank is the upgrade for it anyway????

It will help speed up the cycle but isn't strictly necessary.

If moving media from a dark place on your old tank to your new tank make sure it also goes into a dark place (like your sump) or you'll probabaly get some strange growths when it is exposed to light.
