Hi all, new to the reef keeping. I currently have a new 140gal mixed reef aquarium. It's been cycled with Dr Tim's and Stability.

I've since added some livestock slowly, and quite a few coral to start, a Duncan colony, some xenia, 1 neon green mushroom, 1 Florida ricordia, and 1 superman mushroom.

MY question is about my superman mushroom. It's been seemingly "pinching" in the middle, showing a lime green stringy type material? I'm curious if this is my mushroom splitting into 2 mushrooms? Or if it's something I should be worried about.

I spot feed it reef roids once monthly, its usually open 3-4 inches wide during the day, but been half that since it's started "pinching"..it is on a tiny piece of stone, if he's splitting should I add more beneath him for something to "latch" onto?

sorry for my photo, hard getting a good angle the glass won't blur it at.

thanks and happy reefing!!

It does look like it’s involved in a civil war and it’s going to separate into 2, the conservatives in the north and the rebels in the south. Pretty common occurrence when a mushroom has grown up to big and it starts having internal conflict over which half is going to call the shots.

LOL.

Should I add some rock.beneath it for whoever decides to create their own country?

It’s a good idea to do that so you can move it around or trade it for something else without having to pry it off the substrate.

So it would likely be a good idea to throw some more rubble under them?
I would. It might help them grip and split easier but it will make it easier if you want to relocate them or sell one of them. Not going to hurt anything though!
